[Mexican War]. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Pass Signed "L. de Sta. Anna" as president of Mexico. One page, 8.25" x 10.75", in Spanish, Mexico, September 2, 1847. Santa Anna, serving his tenth non-consecutive term as president of Mexico, is here authorizing the free pass of the Prussian minister to Mexico, Mr. Seiffart, through the garitas, or gates, a series of fortified inspection stations used to collect taxes on goods entering Mexico City. Separation at the edges of the horizontal fold has been repaired with tape and smoothed folds. Else fine.

Two weeks after this letter was written, on September 13, the American army, following their success at Chapultepec, seized Garita San Cosme and Garita de Belén, causing panic within the city causing Santa Anna and what remained of the Mexican army to withdraw from the city. Mexico City was surrendered the following day. Santa Anna resigned the presidency on September 16 and went into voluntary exile.
