Description

[Goliad Cholera Epidemic]. Ramón Músquiz Letter Signed. One page of one leaf, 6" x 7.75", Bexar, March 29, 1831, in Spanish to the alcalde at Goliad. In this letter, Músquiz acknowledges a report about the smallpox situation in Goliad, and he is very pleased that the sanitary commission is constantly working to relieve the epidemic. Cholera epidemics haunted Goliad, as it did other places. Three years after this 1831 epidemic, another broke out in the village, which lies just forty-eight miles from the Gulf Coast, and nearly wiped out the inhabitants of the village. Earlier in 1828, Ramón Músquiz was appointed political chief of the Department of Texas by the governor of Coahuila and Texas; he served until 1834. He was favorable to the many U.S. citizens immigrating into Texas by helping them keep their slaves and by protecting them against hostile Indians. Toned with some spotting.
