[French and Indian War]. Jeffrey Amherst Letter Signed "Jeff: Amherst" as Crown Governor of Virginia and Governor-General of Canada. One page with integral blank, 8" x 13.25", New York, August 7, 1762. Writing to Col. Whiting "Commanding the Provincial Troops in Camp at Crownpoint" from his base in New York, he says that he is pleased " hear that your Men are more Healthy than in former Campaigns..."

Apparently, Whiting had written to Amherst previously asking advice regarding two captured deserters. Amherst responds: "As I am always glad to Catch hold of any opportunity of Shewing [sic] Mercy, I Pardon the Two Deserters,, belonging to the Connecticutt [sic] Troops, on Condition that they Enter into the Regular Service, but I think it best they should Continue in Confinement untill [sic] the Serjeant [sic] & Corporal of the 44th (whom I have Ordered from Albany to Conduct the Recruits from the Newhampshire [sic] Regiment to Canada) Arrive at Crownpoint. And when they are ready to Set off, you will Order them to be Delivered over to the Care of the said Serjeant [sic], Acquainting Lt. Colonel Elliot of their Names...that he may Include them in the List he Sends to Governor Gage." Smooth folds, else fine.
