Nineteenth-Century Autograph Album containing over 230 signatures of nineteenth-century politicians, including signatures of the president at the time, Andrew Johnson, and four future presidents: Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, U. S. Grant (on card inserted into book), and James Buchanan. Members of Johnson's cabinet have also signed, including Hugh McCulloch, William Seward, Edwin Stanton, Orville Browning, William Dennison, James Harlan, Gideon Welles, Harry Stanberry, and Alexander Randall. Some signatures are dated by the signee.

Most of the 230 signatures belonged to the 39th U.S. Congress, which met from March 1865 through March 1867. This Congress, which became the first Reconstruction-era Congress, was in session during the second inauguration and assassination of Abraham Lincoln; the end of the Civil War; the completion of the current dome of the U.S. Capital building; and the re-admittance of Tennessee. They passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the Freedmen's Bureau Bill, and the Fourteenth Amendment. Examples of signatures from this Congress (in addition to the four future presidents above) include Schuyler Colfax, Thaddeus Stevens, John Sherman, Henry Wilson, and James Doolittle. Also included are signatures not associated with the 39th Congress, such as John C. Calhoun, John H. Eaton, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Jesup. Some signatures are not signed directly on the pages of the album, but are on cards, slips of paper excised from letters, envelopes, or letters that have been affixed to album pages. Other items, such as newspaper clippings and a U.S. Senate ticket to the impeachment of President Johnson dated April 24, 1868, are also affixed onto pages in the book.

The autograph album (6" x 9") containing blank pages was printed by J. B. Lippincott & Co. of Philadelphia. On the front paste-down endpaper is the name Charles Blakiston; written on the front free endpaper is "Autographs of President, Members of his Cabinet, and of the 39th Congress." Later penciled and penned biographical notations appear next to some signatures. The album's spine is missing, and the front cover is detached. Many sections in the book are loose. Overall, this is an impressive signature collection of important nineteenth century politicians.
