Nikola Tesla Autograph Letter Signed "N. Tesla". One page, 8" x 9.5", New York, September 4, 1895, to journalist and author Frank G. Carpenter. Thirty-nine years old when he wrote this letter, Tesla responds to a request by Carpenter, mentioning the destruction of his New York laboratory which occurred six months earlier. In part, "Since the destruction of my former laboratory I have learned that I have great many friends in your profession. . . . I can assure you that I shall be pleased to make your personal acquaintance. You will find us at my laboratory 46 East Houston Street any day from 10-12 A.M. and 3-7 P.M. If this time should be inconvenient you may call any time during the day. It is probable you will find me." Born in the Austrian Empire, the great electrical engineer and inventor became a naturalized U.S. citizen four years before writing this letter. He had established two laboratories in New York City, one on Fifth Avenue (which was destroyed) and one on Houston Street. He is best known for communicating wirelessly through radio in 1894. Attached to the verso is a Thomas Nelson Page ALS (1897). Frank Carpenter was a journalist, author, and photographer, known best for his travel books. The letter, with image and short printed article, are attached to a slightly larger backing.
