NASA Group Five Astronauts: All Nineteen Signatures on NASA Hand-Lettered Presentation Certificate. This group of astronauts, humorously called the "Original 19" by John Young, was selected by NASA in April 1966. A decorative 8.5" x 10.5" (sight size) sheet with a NASA "meatball" logo at top, matted and framed (no glass) to an overall 13" x 16". Lines are drawn in two rows for the signatures, with names neatly noted beneath, while at the top is written "5th Astronaut Team" and "April 5, 1965 [sic]" (all in pencil). Each astronaut has signed in ink in alphabetical order, as follows: "Vance Brand" (ASTP, STS-5, STS-41-B, STS-35); "John S. Bull" (d. 2008) (never flew); "Gerald P. Carr" (Skylab 4); "Charlie Duke, Jr" (Apollo 16, Moonwalker); "Joe Engle" (STS-2, STS-51-I); "Ron Evans" (d. 1990) (Apollo 17); "Edward G. Givens Jr." (d. 1967) (never flew); "Fred W. Haise" (Apollo 13); "Jim Irwin" (d. 1991) (Apollo 15, Moonwalker); "Don Lind" (STS-51-B); "Jack Lousma" (Skylab 3, STS-3); "Ken Mattingly" (Apollo 16, STS-4, STS-51-C); "Bruce McCandless 2nd" (STS-41-B, STS-31); "Ed Mitchell" (Apollo 14, Moonwalker); "Bill Pogue" (Skylab 4); "Stuart A. Roosa" (d. 1994) (Apollo 14); "Jack Swigert" (d. 1982) (Apollo 13); "Paul J. Weitz" (Skylab 2, STS-6); and "Al Worden" (Apollo 15). A unique item in our experience. A tiny surface scratch on the certificate and a small dig in the mat, mentioned for accuracy. Otherwise excellent.

This is a very distinguished group of gentlemen. Interestingly, Joe Engle was the only astronaut ever hired that had already earned his astronaut wings (as an X-15 pilot). Three of the six lunar module pilots to walk on the moon are in this group (Duke, Irwin, Mitchell) as are six others that flew to the moon (Evans, Haise, Mattingly, Roosa, Swigert, Worden). Nine of the twenty-four astronauts on Apollo moon missions are from this group.
