Description

NASA Astronaut Groups Two and Three: Two Hawaii Training Photos Signed by Fifteen in Total. A number of astronauts were taken to Hawaii for their first geologic training exercises between January 12 and January 24, 1965, in order to view the amazing display of recent basaltic volcanic features. It was NASA's feeling that the fresh, recent, and ancient lava-flow surfaces could be compared and related to possible lunar surface features. Part of the viewing was done by flyovers in a twelve-seat aircraft operated by Hawaiian Air Tour Service. The pilot of that aircraft managed to get all the members of the two groups to sign these 10" x 8" B&W photos. The first image pictures and is signed by the following: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", "Rusty Schweickart", "Elliot See", "Charlie Bassett", "Walter Cunningham", and "Bill Anders". It is inscribed by one of them: "Nice Job H A T S! To Timmy". The second photo pictures and is signed by: "Donn Eisele", "Dick Gordon", "C Williams", "Charles Conrad Jr", "Buzz Aldrin", "Roger Chaffee", "Alan Bean", and "Dave Scott". Inscribed "to Timmy". Both photos are in generally fine condition with some light wear. They both have typed captions stapled to the bottom and contrast of the Armstrong signature is poor and it appears to be smudged. Also included in this lot are three photos, a newspaper clipping, and the Senior Pilot Log that includes these flights with dates, times, and names of those carried.

What a group of men this was! Five of them would later walk on the moon (interestingly, the newspaper article mentions that one of them might be the first to do that). Another three would fly to the moon. Four would die during training before ever having an opportunity to fly. An absolutely unique offering.
