DescriptionNapoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 9", Saint Cloud, May 2, 1811. In French (with translation), a letter regarding preparations against a siege in Dantzig: "Monsieur the Count de Cessac, I read with interest the letter of General Rapp. I see that there is in Dantzig a large quantity of wheat, much grain alcohol which can take the place of French eau de vie and much wood; The cattle is not lacking around there as well as hay. If the salt is short have a good quantity of it to come by the Vistule. My intention is to rely entirely on the Governor to approvision the place for one year, without it costing anything, by putting the hand on all the reserve in case of rupture. In this way the town will be liberated from the victualing for case of siege. There remains only to look after the daily victualing. I shall not make any difficulty to take half of it on myself, leaving the other half to the town..."
Napoleon's forces had successfully captured Danzig in 1807, after a 5-day siege (the Siege of Danzig lasted from May 19 to May 24, 1807). Ironically, the letter offered here outlines preventative measures against a siege. Napoleon signs perpendicularly, at bottom. Docketed on verso: "Letter from the Emperor related to Danzig / secret." Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.
Condition: Letter is hinged along the left margin to a larger sheet. Usual mail folds, tearing and paper loss has been professionally restored where wax seal was torn open.
