Napoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed "Nap" as emperor of France. One page, 6.75" x 7" (sight), in French, Paris, October 29, 1808. Addressed to General Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke, Napoleon's Minster of War, Napoleon returns various documents relating to the army of Portugal and requests a copy of a letter from General Jean-Andoche Junot and "the Russian admiral" be sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

One year earlier, Gen. Junot led the invasion of Portugal, occupying the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on November 30, 1807. For his victory, Napoleon named him 1st Duke of Abrant├Ęs and governor of Portugal. He was not long resting on his laurels, however, as he was driven from Portugal by the British after the Battle of Vimeiro on August 21, 1808. In October 1808, the same month that this document was signed, Junot returned to France and was nearly court-martialed.

Matted with an engraved portrait of Napoleon and framed to an overall size of 20.75" x 15".

Condition: One horizontal fold. Scattered foxing.
