Napoleon Bonaparte Document Signed "Napoleon". One page, 23" x 17", no place; May 16, 1813. Large partially printed vellum certificate issued by Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor, naming Luc-Barthelemy-Marie Duhamel a "Baron de Notre Empire". The document is imprinted with an engraving of the Imperial French eagle and incorporates a beautiful hand-painted coat-of-arms at the upper left corner, most likely of the new Baron's family. A substantial "Napoleon" signature at the lower left corner of this piece. Attached at the lower left margin is a large red wax Imperial Seal affixed with yellow and gray ribbons. The obverse depicts Napoleon enthroned. Document and seal are framed to the overall size of 24.5" x 25.5".

Condition: All inscriptions, including Napoleon's signature, are somewhat faded. Creasing throughout, with soiling at edges and near center of document. Area of paper loss at left vertical edge, does not affect text or coat of arms. Seal is still attached, although wax has broken off in places. Else good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
