First Lady Nancy Reagan Writes About the Attempted Assassination of President Reagan

Nancy Reagan Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages on two sheets, 6" x 7.75", The White House; Easter Sunday [April 19, 1981]. Addressed to actor William Holden shortly after the attempted assassination of her husband, President Ronald Reagan on blue White House stationery. William Holden was a close personal friend of Ronald and Nancy's, having served as best man at their wedding in 1952. The letter presents an extraordinarily intimate look into the mind of the First Lady during an event that rocked the nation. Written in her own quirky script, it reads in full:

    "Bill, dear-
Thank you for your wishes, messages and lovely Easter flowers. It was indeed a special Easter for us- We have so much to be grateful for.

My god, can you believe this really happened? I can't - even now. That whole day is a blur of noise, shouting, people running, trying to hold myself together and keep out of everyone's way - and praying- I was so scared, Bill. How could anyone want to shoot Ronnie? The whole thing was a miracle - the bullet [sic] coming an inch from his heart, half of the blood in his body now belonging to someone else, the damn thing not exploding. God surely had his hand on his shoulder.

Thank God, he's home now and hopefully this terrible nightmare will soon disappear. Now starts the long road to real recovery. I keep having to remind him it will only be three weeks tomorrow. And it will take much longer than that.

It meant a lot to Ronnie when I told him we had heard from you. If you ever get back here be sure and let us know. You know how much we'd love to see you.

Thank you again, dear one, for your concern and friendship.
    Love, Nancy"

The attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan took place three weeks earlier on March 30, 1981.

Also included are the original transmittal envelope and a congratulatory "Mailgram" sent from William Holden to Ronald Reagan after Reagan was elected President. The telegram is dated November 24, 1980, and reads in full: "Dear Ronnie, Now that some of those wires have slacked off I would like to offer my congratulations. You've had my support in the past and will in the future. My love to you and Nancy. Bill Holden."
