    Description

Moses Austin Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 4.25"; Ste. Genevieve District, Missouri; July 1, 1812. Then serving as a justice on the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions in Ste. Genevieve, Moses issues an order to sheriff Henry Dodge: "you may stay the execution against Mr. Moses Bates in favour of Horace Austin. for my use Mr. Bates satisfying the cost of suit - Moses Austin." Docketed on verso in an unknow hand. Austin had served briefly as a justice, receiving the appointment from then governor William Henry Harrison.

In 1796, Moses Austin (1761-1821), the father of Stephen F. Austin, settled at the small Missouri community of Mine A. Burton, the first settlement in Washington County (then part of Upper Spanish Louisiana). The community was established near lead deposits, which Austin mined and shipped from the nearby Mississippi River port town of Ste. Genevieve. His Missouri lead business venture was not successful, and he ran into trouble after 1812 for not paying his debts, so he traveled to Texas in 1820 in search of other opportunities. After receiving a grant to bring 300 colonists to Texas, he returned to Missouri to make preparations for his new Texas colony. Just two months after arriving back in Missouri, however, he died, but not before requesting his son Stephen to carry out his plan to begin a colony in Texas.

Condition: Gently toned, with flattened folds. Mounting remnants at top corners on verso.
