Montgomery of Alamein Typed Document Signed "Montgomery of Alamein F.M.". Two pages, np, nd. This typed document recalls the orders issued by Montgomery on April 14th, before D-Day. It reads, in part: "It was during April that I issued the last tactical instruction to the two Armies which were to land in Normandy. This is what I wrote, date the 14th April. '1. In operation OVERLORD an uncertain factor is the speed at which the enemy will be able to concentrate his mobile and armoured divisions against us for counter-attack. On our part we must watch the situation carefully, and must not get our main bodies so stretched that they would be unable to hold against determined counter-attack; on the other hand, having seized the initiative by our initial landing, we must ensure that we keep it...". Bernard Law Montgomery (Montgomery of Alamein) was described by Time magazine as a "dedicated professional soldier with a superb sense of the big things of war." He was born in London in 1887, and educated at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. During WWII, after several successful missions, he was appointed Commander of the 8th Army, and led it to victory from El Alamein across North Africa into Sicily and Italy. In September of 1944, he was promoted to Field Marshal, and was named Commander-in-Chief of the British and Allied Armies in Northern France. In 1946, he was dubbed Lord Montgomery of Alamein. This typed document is in very fine condition; light overall toning; paper has become slightly thin but the signature and type are still quite bold and dark.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
