    Description

Milledge L. Bonham Letter Signed. One page written on recto and verso, 8" x 10", on blue-lined paper headed "State of South Carolina, Head Quarters," Columbia, June 10, 1863. Penned in ink and signed in pencil. Milledge Luke Bonham was an American politician and congressman who served as the 70th governor of South Carolina from 1862 until 1864. He was a Confederate general during the Civil War. Here, Bonham writes to Confederate President Jefferson Davis, regarding military appointments.

Addressed to "His Excellency President Davis," the letter reads: "Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of 15 April 1863 informing me of the appointment of BF Perry Esq. as Commissioner of Appraisements for this State and requesting me to appoint another to serve with him. It appears by a postscript to your letter dated May 29, 1863, that its transmission was delayed until that day, by an accident. It reached me on the 6th inst. I have the honor to inform you that I have appointed Capt. Alfred M. Martin, Commissioner for this State to act with Col. Perry. I have the honor to be Very Respectfully, Your Obedient Servt., M.L. Bonham."

Docket on verso notes that Capt. Alfred M. Martin was made a "Commissioner under the Impressment Act." Martin was a member of Calhoun's Mounted Men of E Company assigned to General Chestnut's command. Rough left edge; very large tear at lower third, easily restored.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
