Millard Fillmore Letter Signed "Millard Fillmore". One page, 6.5" x 8.25", Washington, August 10, 1850. A letter to the Senate of the United States concerning Henry R. Schoolcraft's reports on Indians: "I transmit herewith a communication from the Department of the Interior, and the papers which accompanied it; being the first part of the results of investigations by Henry R. Schoolcraft Esq. under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved March 3rd, 1847, requiring the Secretary of War 'to collect and digest such statistics and materials as may illustrate the history, the present condition, and future prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States."

The next month, the Compromise of 1850 was passed, which saw California join the Union, with other western territories and borders being made out west. Much of the western United States was heavily populated by Native Americans, and Fillmore sought to investigate these inhabitants. Henry Schoolcraft was a U.S. Indian agent who had published an extensive study in 1846 entitled, Indian Tribes of the United States. He had been appointed as an agent in 1822, and conducted relations and research with tribes in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. Matted to the overall size of 12" x 16". Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning along center fold.
