Millard Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed as President. Two pages (single sheet), 7.75" x 9.75"; Washington City; November 2, 1850. A letter to Alexander Vatteman thanking him for two engravings presented to the White House and a series of medals presented to Congress. In part: "I owe you an apology for having so long delayed to acknowledge the receipt of those two beautiful engravings which you presented to 'the Presidential Mansion'... I also avail myself of the opportunity to express to you the high gratification which I enjoyed in examining that splendid series of medals struck at various times by the French Government to commemorate great national events, which you presented to Congress. I fear it will be many years if not centuries before this nation will be able to present such a string of victorious jewels. Our triumphs are triumphs of peace and our conquests are conquests of reason which do not dazzle like those of arms, and are seldom commemorated in medallic art... Millard Fillmore."

Fillmore had assumed the presidency upon the death of Zachary Taylor just four months prior to writing this letter. In that time, Fillmore had been active in helping to pass the Compromise of 1850 in September. During this same period, Fillmore flexed American power in a strongly worded warning to France in response to their attempts to annex Hawaii. Read within the context of the current strained relations with France, Fillmore's wording in the letter offered here takes on a heavier tone and intent beyond an expression of gratitude. Ex. Lindley and Charles Eberstadt Distinguished Collection of Presidential Autographs and Portraits. Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1964.

Condition: Age toning at edges, with stray stains at top and top right corner. Single pinhole at top center. Pencil annotations at bottom on verso.
