    Description

    Winfield Scott Schley Letter to President Grover Cleveland. One page, 4.75" x 8"; Washington D.C.; October 29, 1897. Schley sends congratulations to the President on the birth of his son: "The news flashed over the wires yesterday of the arrival of an heir in your name were tidings of great joy to your friends everywhere!"

    Schley had a long naval career including service in the Union naval forces during the Civil War. In 1884, he led the successful rescue of arctic explorer Adolphus Greeley. He also served, with some controversy, during the Spanish-American War; most notably at the battle of Santiago.

    Condition: Excellent condition, with a single horizontal fold.
