    Description

Winfield Scott Hancock Letter on Civil War Artist Edwin Forbes. Letter Signed, 2 pages (1st & 4th integral leaves), 5.5" x 8.5", Governor's Island, New York, January 7, 1882. To Messrs. Estes & Lauriat. The first page is torn at bottom - but easily repaired; otherwise good. Here is an opportunity to acquire one of the Civil War's most distinguished soldiers discussing the work of the one of the War's most distinguished reportorial artists, Edwin Forbes, of the illustrated newspaper Leslie's Weekly. "I have carefully examined all the pictures by Mr. Forbes entitled 'Studies of the Great Army.' I, together with others, have always recognized their importance as a valuable addition to the history of the Civil War. Their reputation I think is well established - I will return them herewith." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
