    Description

Winfield Scott Hancock Autograph Letter Signed. Two integral pages, 5" x 8", New York, October 19, 1874, to Gen. Thomas Ruger, the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, regarding a visit to the Academy by Lord Dufferin, third Governor-General of Canada. In part: "Lord Dufferin will not make the visit to West Point which I suggested to you. He was very anxious...but he and Lady Dufferin have complicated themselves in so many engagements here, of a social nature that they cannot spare a whole day..."

Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was a career army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican War; he was especially known for his personal leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg. Following the Civil War, he served as the army's senior major general with headquarters in New York. In the presidential election of 1880, Hancock was nominated as the Democratic candidate, but lost the election to James Garfield.
