    Description

Sherman Asserts: "my family is Strongly Catholic, but that I am not"

William Tecumseh Sherman Autograph Letter Signed "W.T. Sherman". 8.5" x 5.5", on 912 Garrison Avenue letterhead, St. Louis, March 15,1886. To Edward W. Bok. Sherman writes, in full: "Yours of March 13 is received and in Answer I am willing to State to you, but not for publication - that my family is Strongly Catholic, but that I am not - Until I ask Some favor, the public has no claim to question me further. Truly your friend." Light marginal toning and wear, very light creasing, usual folds, overall fine condition.

Although Sherman was raised in a devout Roman Catholic home, and attended church regularly, he ceased attending at the start of the Civil War and remained away from the Church for the remainder of his life. At the time of Sherman's death in 1891, his son Thomas, a Jesuit, reportedly stated: "My father was baptized in the Catholic Church, married in the Catholic Church, and attended the Catholic Church until the outbreak of the Civil War. Since that time he has not been a communicant of any church ..." (Fletcher, Life and Reminiscences of General Wm. T. Sherman by Distinguished Men of His Time, 1891, p. 139). In 1888, two years after he wrote to Bok, Sherman stated publicly that "my immediate family are strongly Catholic. I am not and cannot be." (See "Hon. James G. Blaine," North American Review 147, no. 385 (Dec. 1888): pp. 616-624.)

The letter was published in Edward W. Bok, The Americanization of Edward Bok (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920), p. 215.
