William T. Sherman: Two Autograph Letters Signed "W. T. Sherman" as commanding General of the Army with one ALS from Sherman's wife, Ellen.

The first, two integral pages, folded down to 5" x 8", on "Headquarters Army of the United States" letterhead, Washington, January 13, 1879. Sherman writes to Thomas H. Ruger regarding a visit to Atlanta, where Ruger was in command. In part: "We now think we can come to Atlanta about the 27 of this Month, and I want to visit General Warner at Tecumseh Iron Works...near Rome Georgia, either en route to Atlanta or from Atlanta..." With original transmittal envelope.

The second letter is also two integral pages, folded down to 5" x 8", on "Headquarters Army of the United States" letterhead, Washington, January 19, 1879, to Thomas H. Ruger thanking, but declining his offer of hospitality as "...our party is too large, and we will much prefer to stay at the Hotel, but I will see as much as possible of you and the establishment of Atlanta."

In 1879, Sherman, as general-in-chief of the army, visited Atlanta on his tour through the South. Officially, he was there to visit neglected United States property to figure out a way to reclaim and restore them; unofficially he was there to engage with the people and ascertain their views almost fifteen years after the Civil War ended. Thomas Ruger had been a general during the war and was at the time in command of the Department of the South.

Both letters are offered with one Ellen Ewing Sherman Autograph Letter Signed, two integral pages, folded down to 5" x 8", Baltimore, February 6, 1879, to Thomas Ruger thanking him for his letter regarding "the visit of the General and party to Atlanta." With original transmittal envelope.
