    Description

William T. Sherman Inscribed Copy of Memoirs of General William T. Sherman Signed "W.T. Sherman." New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1876. Two volumes in one. 8vo, 405; 409. Brown cloth over boards with titles in gilt. Placed upon the front free endpaper, the general, now two years into retirement, has written, "With the best compliments / of [signed] W.T. Sherman / General / St. Louis Mo. / June 27, 1885 / To Comrade J.B. Harlow / Commander Ransom Post / no. 131. G.A.R. / Dept of Mo-" Sherman lived in St. Louis at the time, said to be his favorite city, and served as the first commander of Ransom Post No. 131. The post was named for General Thomas Ransom who had served under him and died of dysentery during the Savannah Campaign. The book itself shows some shelfwear and damage along the gutter, which has been repaired near the inscription in the front.

"Major" John B. Harlow initially enlisted in the Union Army in April 1861, joining Co. "F," 8th Illinois Infantry, for a term of three months. He reenlisted in August, this time in the 47th Illinois Infantry and served in this regiment through the end of the war. He participated in a number of battles including the Battles of Island No. 10, Corinth, Iuka, the Siege of Vicksburg, and the Mobile Campaign. In 1864 he was promoted to lieutenant, with a brevet promotion to captain in the final year of the war. He joined the postal service in 1866 and assigned to St. Louis in 1871. Two years later he was made superintendent of mails for St. Louis with a promotion to postmaster general in January 1890.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
