William T. Sherman Autograph Letter Signed "W.T. Sherman." Two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", Washington, D.C.; April 29, 1873. A letter addressed to William Conant Church, regarding an invitation to speak at a meeting of the National Rifle Association. Sherman responds, in full:

"Yours of 28 is received. In so much as I am not a member of the Society I expected to be excused from a set speech, and think that you would do well to have someone to respond to the [illegible] Toasts that properly belong to the society. Being now free to say only a few words on some side topic that arises in the Course of the business. When present I will do my best to contribute to the harmony and success of the meeting."

The National Rifle Association had been founded as a direct result of the Civil War. Its initial purpose was to promote marksmanship, as the Civil War evidenced that the majority of new recruits were ill-prepared for handling firearms. Sherman was serving as Commanding General of the U.S. Army when he wrote this letter. Although the NRA had no political agenda, Sherman remains careful in establishing a boundary between the Army and the organization.

William C. Church (1836-1917) served under General Sherman in the Civil War and later co-founded the National Rifle Association in 1871. He became the second president of the association after replacing Ambrose Burnside.

Condition: Letter has usual mail folds, with some light wear and soiling at edges and folds. There is some adhesive staining on the blank page's edges. Overall very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
