"I am about the 'Last of the Mohicans'"

William T. Sherman Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages, 5.5" x 9", New York, December 7, 1888, to "Mrs. Hull" following the death of his wife. The former Union general, likely mindful of the recent deaths of other officers and soldiers he had served with-such as General Grant in 1885 and General Sheridan in August of 1888-writes that he is "about the 'Last of the Mohicans.'" Toned paper with smoothed folds. In part:

"Mrs. Sherman was a strong character devoted chiefly to her children and her Church - From childhood she has never been compelled to work, so that though only 120 pounds weight in 1850 when she married she became quite stout - For years she has withdrawn from general society but sought for objects of charity and Religion - For ten years the insidious cause of her death has been slowly and surly gathering - fatty degradation of the heart - now called 'cardiac asthma' - We had all grown to expect ups & downs - and when last week the doctor notified me of the near approach of death we were taken by surprise. . . . I am about the 'Last of the Mohicans' - Personally I am about as well as usual."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
