William T. Sherman Autograph Letter Signed "W. T. Sherman." Four pages, 5.5" x 9.25", New York, June 13, 1890. In this letter, Sherman writes General Stewart Van Vliet about his attendance at the recent West Point graduation: "On the Roll Call I was the only one present for the Class of 1840. I had expected you, [George W.] Getty & [Oliver L.] Shepherd [sic, Shepard]... I had arranged for a special train to bring us back the city after the banquet...I am sorry you missed the opportunity as on the whole it was perfectly successful." Later in the letter he writes about his upcoming schedule: "I have maarked my book - To start for Portland Maine at 5PM July 2 - by Fall River Boat - to arrive at Portland 2PM of the 3rd. Room... I am getting very tired of the everlasting army meetings two more of which I am committed to vie Boston Aug 12 - and Chicago Sept - unveiling of Grant's Statue in the Park there..."

Six years after retiring as Commanding General of the U.S. Army, Sherman continued his correspondence with veteran Stewart Van Vliet. The two had a long history together, dating back at least to their time together in the U.S. Military Academy (both were in the class of 1840, along with Getty and Shepard). Toned with smoothed folds. Later penciled notations touch the "n" in "Sherman."
