    William T. Sherman Autograph Letter Signed "W. T. Sherman" as commanding general of the United States Army. One page, 5" x 8", on Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, Washington, April 19, 1873, to U. S. Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, in the third person, declining an invitation. In full: "General W. T. Sherman presents his kindest compliments to Mr. & Mrs. Hamilton Fish. Acknowledges receipt of their kind invitation for next Tuesday, and regrets extremely that Mrs. Sherman's absence in Ohio & a prior engagement of the General will prevent the pleasure of acceptance & attendance."
