    Description

    William Smallwood Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 13", Wilmington, January 15, 1778. Sending orders to pick up deserters and investigation of Tory activity. In part: "You are to proceed with the person who will conduct you to a house about twelve miles from this post, where you will probably find John Woodford and Joseph White also a certain William White, all of whom you will secure and bring with you here, examine both within & without the house, and if you find so great a quantity of poultry or other provisions as may appear superabundant for the use of the familly [sic] so as to create suspicion of its being collected for the purpose of conveying it to the enemy, you must bring it along with you, for which purpose impress a Waggon [sic] if necessary - you will take care to treat the inhabitants with decency and humanity... there are four deserters which you may probably be able to pick up on your way back..." Smallwood signs adding his rank. Uneven toning, folds, with small separations at margins.
