    Description

William Hammond Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages written on pages one and two with address and New Orleans postmark on page four, 7.75" x 9.75", New Orleans Barracks, January 17, 1847. Near fine. Writing to his daughter, Hammond, speculates about the upcoming campaign in Mexico, "The Mexicans may intend fighting from the breastworks at St. Louis Potosi [San Luis Potosí] until driven from them which they will certainly be before the middle of March heat unless peace is made, which I think doubtful although we have a rumour [sic] here that our troops are all to be withdrawn upon the left bank of the Rio Grande, which may be for peace or other movements on VeraCruse [Vera Cruz], and make it and Tampico the base of operations into Mexico, which ought to have been done at first and the matter would now be over." From the Taking of Texas Collection.
