William Beggs Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages written on pages one through three and docketed on page four, missing lower half of last leaf, 7.5" x 12", Camp G. W. F. Wood, Texas, October 18, 1857. Slightly faded, else, fine.

The letter is addressed to a friend, J. A. Richards, at Camp Duncan, Texas. Beggs tells Richards how he, "had a liking for the 'beauties' while in Eagle Pass. . ." But, he added, ". . .they learned [sic] me a 'lesson' which I will not soon forget." Beggs spends most of the letter telling his friend about life in camp and how the company had improved things, "Rich, I wish you could come and see our camp, for I can 'tell' you it is fixed up 'so nice as never was.'" He wrote that "Lieut. Phillips, three non.c.officers & fifteen Privates are going to leave this camp tomorrow (Monday morning) for a ten days scout up the Nueces."

Camp Wood, named for Bvt. Maj. George W. F. Wood, was on the Nueces River in far southwestern Real County. The camp was established as a United States military outpost on May 20, 1857, by Lieutenant E. D. Philips commanding a company of the First Infantry assigned to protect the San Antonio-El Paso route and the Rio Grande valley from Indian raids. The camp was abandoned on October 29, 1857, ten days after this letter was written. Lt. John Bell Hood, later commander of Hood's Texas Brigade, reestablished the post in 1858 with a company of the Second Cavalry and remained until November 1860. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
