William Barret Travis Double Autograph Document Signed on a Single Sheet. 7.75" x 4.5", n.p. ( but likely Claiborne, Alabama), November 8, 1829. Both documents are receipts issued to Adam Carson for legal advertising; one for the estate of James Carson, the other for the estate of Thomas Carson. Travis signs "Wm B. Travis" beneath each recorded payment. Travis established a newspaper in 1829 in Claiborne, which he ran very briefly; he abandoned his wife and family the following year to go to Texas. He died heroically at the Alamo at the age of 26 on March 6, 1836. Autograph material by Travis is scarce, especially from his life prior to arriving in Texas. This is the only exemplar dating from his brief newspaper career we have ever seen. It was last sold as lot 247 in Charles Hamilton's December 7, 1978 auction. With a few ink smudges and a single horizontal fold. The document can easily be split into two complete receipts.
