Vermont Military Broadside. One page, 9.25" x 11", issued from "Head-Quarters, Bennington" on July 20, 1807, and signed in print "By order of the Commander in Chief, Adj. Gen." Headed with "State of Vermont. / General Orders" and reading in part, "By order of the President [Thomas Jefferson] . . . this State is required to take effectual measures, for having two thousand seven hundred and sixty nine of the Militia of Vermont, detached and duly organized, armed and equipped according to law." On the verso is written, "Genl. Orders 20th July 1807." During Jefferson's second administration, his chief difficulties resulted from attacks on neutral American shipping by warring Britain and Napoleonic France. Jefferson placed his faith in diplomacy, backed by economic pressure as represented first by the Non-Importation Act (1806) and then by the Embargo Act of 1807. Toned and foxed with a few annotations.
