    Description

USS Ticonderoga: Chief Naval Engineer Theodore Zeller Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 13.5" x 8.5", "Navy Yard, New York, May 27th 1863." With the outbreak of the Civil War, U.S. Navy Engineer Theodore Zeller was ordered to New York to superintend the building of the machinery for gunboats, sloops of war, ironclads, frigates, and other vessels being constructed for the Navy's use. One such ship was the second USS Ticonderoga (1863), a steam sloop-of-war that served with distinction during the Civil War. Zeller completed work on the Ticonderoga with the assistance of 1st Assistant Engineer Edward Marsland, who conducted the first engine tests on the Ticonderoga.

This lot includes Marsland's unsigned May 22, 1863, draft letter to Zeller, explaining the success of the engine tests, as well as Zeller's letter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, relaying the good news. Zeller's letter reads in part: "I have the honor to state that the revolutions of the engines of the Ticonderoga was, when the speed of the ship was 12 ¾ knots, about 78 per minute . . . her engines make with ease, 74 revolutions without blowers." Signed "Theo Zeller, Chief Engr, USN." Docketed on verso. Both letters are lightly age toned, and in fine condition.
