    USS Norfolk Packet Order Book. 8" x 13". Written in large letters on the first page, "U.S. Schooner Norfolk Packet." According to the first entry, the General Orders were "to be observed by all the Officers attached to the U.S. Schr: Norfolk Packet." The orders begin with "Order No. 1," are written in clear ink beginning on the second leaf. The handwritten orders end with Order No. 19. Numerous loose printed orders and circulars issued throughout the Civil War are also included, a few are affixed to leaves. Some staining and soiling to the hard covers, pages, and loose leaves of printed orders. Written on the front cover is "Order Book."

    The schooner Norfolk Packet was built in 1848. The U.S. Navy purchased the vessel in 1861 and assigned it to David Porter's fleet on the Mississippi River. She supported Union troops at the capture of New Orleans and was soon sent to blockade Confederate harbors along the Atlantic Seacoast. She was decommissioned in 1865 after the war.
