    Description

Union Officer's Letter Home Regarding Slavery, four pages, 7.5" x 12.5", Medon, Tennessee, August 24, 1862. The identity of the author, who signs "Your devoted husband", is known because this letter came from an archive dispersed in the 1950s. Captain John P. Jones of Missouri here states that, "...I am getting to be more and more of an abolitionist. I believe that this accursed institution must go down...Thank God the American Soldier is no longer to be used as a slave catcher, no longer to drive helpless women around at the point of the bayonet, and be obliged to obey orders that make him almost ashamed of being an American Soldier. We may expect better things now...". A few marginal splits along folds. Good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
