Union General Philip Sheridan Archive of Autograph Letters Signed to Colonel Charles Wilson, Editor of the Republican Chicago Journal. A fascinating group of fifteen letters, all written during the 1870-1877 period on 5" x 8" blank lettersheets. Fourteen are signed; thirteen of those are completely in Sheridan's handwriting. Most include the original transmittal envelopes. They are generally of a personal nature; the two men were obviously close friends and enjoyed playing a game of euchre together. Brief excerpts of two follow:

    November 15, 1871:
"If you & Rucker will come up to my House, we will take the starch out of Johnston & Rucker as a measure[?] of revenge for our defeat the other night."
December 20, 1871: "Come down tonight for a game. I have a little old Scotch which will not be bad to take this cold weather. If Farmer does not go to the church party tonight bring him along."

The fifteenth, though not signed, is an extremely important piece- a handwritten Sheridan wedding invitation written in an unknown hand to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson: "Genl and Mrs Rucker invite you to be present at the marriage ceremony of their daughter Irene & Lieut Gen. Sheridan which will take place on Thursday June the third [1875] at half past eight o'clock in the evening. 604 Michigan Avenue". She was twenty-two and Sheridan was forty-four; they would have four children together. Generally fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
