    Description

    Union General Philip Kearny Autograph Letter Signed "P. Kearny / Brgd. Genl. Comd." One page, 5" x 7.5", "Hd. Qrs. N. J. V.," September 27, 1861. These "Orders" to "Colonels & Chiefs" state that "As soon as the 3d N. J. V. has reached Clouds Mill, on its return to Camp, you may relieve your command from its state of 'warning.'" Endorsements on the reverse include those of Adjutant Joseph W. Plume, Col. James Simpson, Major William Hexamer, Adjutant William Henry, and Lt. Col. Samuel Owen. Philip Kearny, a Virginia native, was killed on September 1, 1862, during the Battle of Chantilly in Fairfax County, Virginia. Smoothed folds. Minor spotting.
