Union General Marcellus M. Crocker Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10". "Camp of the 3rd Brigade at Abbeville, Miss., Dec. 8th 1862." A war-date letter to Governor Samuel Kirkwood, regarding the promotion of an officer and accusations made against him. In part: "... he has been charged with all manner of disreputable things - such as stealing the jewels out of a masonic lodge, illicit intercourse with negro women..." In a lengthy postscript, Crocker makes note that, "The Iowa Brigade is the crack brigade of this army. And can do more subsisting 'on the enemies country' on a less given space than any troops of my acquaintance." This is an early reference to "subsisting" on enemy country, a tactic that would continue to be effectively employed by Grant in the Vicksburg campaign and Sherman in his "March to the Sea". Bold ink on clean paper.
