Union General Isaac I. Stevens Autograph Letter Signed, one page, on National Democratic Executive Committee Rooms stationery, 7.5" x 10", Washington, D.C., September 11, 1860, to John Farrell, New York. Stevens is named a "Chairman" on the printed portion of this letterhead. The letter reads in part: "...we forward to your address the following documents 25 Copies of the Doctrines of the Republican Party [and] 25 Copies of Who are the Disunionists?...". The relatively short life of Isaac Stevens (1818-1862) was filled with adventure and accomplishment. A West Point graduate and career officer, Stevens scouted a transcontinental railroad route, later becoming the first Governor of Washington Territory. He was later active in Democratic politics and worked for the Breckinridge presidential campaign in 1860. Despite supporting the Southern Democrats, Stevens stayed loyal to the Union when war broke out and rose to the rank of major general. His life and career came to an abrupt end thanks to a rebel bullet fired in Chantilly, Virginia on September 1, 1862. Bold signature on a letterhead that in of itself is a great piece of political memorabilia. Folds, even toning. Fine condition overall.
