Union General Henry Halleck Autograph Letter Signed "H. W. Halleck" as general in chief. One page, 8" x 10", on Head-Quarters of the Army letterhead, Washington, November 17, 1862, to the governor of Iowa, Samuel J. Kirkwood, Iowa City, Iowa. The letter reads in full: "Lt Col Sullivan reports to day that all Iowa troops captured at Shiloh have been exchanged: That the Confederate authorities have never reported any prisoners in their hands at Belmont. It was supposed that Genl Grant had effected their exchange many months ago. The matter will be further inquired into." Fine condition.

Eleven regiments from Iowa took part in the Battle of Shiloh and the men fought bravely. Out of a total of 6,664 Iowans that participated, 2, 409 were killed, wounded, or missing and many had been forced to surrender. By the fall of 1862, however, all troops from Iowa in Confederate hands had been exchanged. The men were sent to Annapolis, Maryland, and while there, some of the officers contacted Gen. Halleck, the general in chief of all Union armies, asking for permission to visit the nation's capital. Halleck's reply read, "You can come. Such troops can go any where: your indomitable courage at Shiloh saved the Army of the Mississippi from total annihilation."
