Union General Alexander Hays Letter Signed. One and one-quarter lined pages of a bifolium, n.p., August 10, 1863, on letterhead reading "Headquarters 3d Division 2d Corps." In this letter, Hays writes to New York Governor Horatio Seymour about the "meritorious" actions of Private John C. Carrol of the 6th New York Cavalry Regiment, Co. "D" "at the battle of Gettysburg." Hayes explains that the valiant private "bore the banner of my division . . . throughout the entire action of Gettysburg." Two years later, Hays was struck in the head by a bullet and killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1865. This letter bears some soiling.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
