Description

Union Colonel (Future General) James C. Rice Autograph Letter Signed. Two ruled pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", "Head Quarters 44th N.Y.S.V. Camp near Falmouth, Va," April 8, 1863, to General J. T. Sprague. Rice expresses his "disappointment in the character and competency of First Lieut [Allen C.] Adsit, lately commissioned in this regiment [44th New York State Infantry Volunteers]." As he explains, Rice's failure had been to recommend Adsit based on the opinion of "one officer." Adsit was young - twenty-four years old - when he enlisted in 1861. He remained a first lieutenant in the regiment for five more months when he was discharged from the service. James Rice, known as "Old Crazy," led his regiment through many battles, including Gettysburg. For his valiant service there, he was promoted a brigadier general. The cruel battlefield at Spotsylvania claimed his life, however, on May 10, 1864. Docketed. Rice's ink and signature are clear and bold. Very clean paper.
