    Ulysses S. Grant: War-Date Autograph Letter Signed [ALS] to General George Meade.
    5" x 8" bilfolium letter written in pencil on "Headquarters Armies of the United States" letterhead, May 31,1864, n.p., to General Meade. In full: "I supposed naturally that Gen. Abercrombie would fortify at White House [Virginia] and intended to ask you if the place had been fortified when used as a depot before but forgot it. I wish you would send one Engineer officer for the purpose of laying out the work. I will send instructions to Abercrombie accordingly. . Directions will be sent to Smith in the morning to march immediately to Cold Harbor and take place between Wright and Warren. If you will send the officer you detail to report to Abercrombie to report to me in the morning I will give him Smith's and Abercrombie's directions to take with him. U. S. Grant Lt. Gen."
