Thomas W. Sweeny Muster Roll Signed "T. W. Sweeny." Two pages, 31" x 20.5", Columbus [Georgia], October 31, 1868. Sweeny signs on the second page as "Inspector and Mustering Officer" for the 16th United States Infantry. Weakened folds are separating throughout with some loss of paper.

Thomas W. Sweeny (1820-1892) was a career military man born in Cork, Ireland. He moved to the United States in 1833 and enlisted in the U. S. Army during the Mexican War. He was a brigadier general of Home Guards during the early years of the Civil War. He saw action at Shiloh and the Battle of Atlanta during the Atlanta Campaign. In 1866, he led the Fenian raids, a failed invasion of British military sites in Canada by the American based Fenian Brotherhood in an effort to force the British out of Ireland. He was arrested for breaking neutrality laws, but was released shortly thereafter and retired from the U. S. Army in 1870 with the rank of brigadier general.
