Stonewall Jackson accepts his first commission

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson Autograph Letter Signed "Bvt Capt T.J. Jackson." One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", "Fort Hamilton, New York Harbor", New York; December 27, 1848. In a short letter to General R. Jones, Jackson reports receipt of his very first commission as first lieutenant. It reads, in full: "I have the honor to inform you of the receipt of my commission as 1st Lieutenant in the first regiment of U.S. Artillery and of Brevt Captain in the U.S. Army and to inform you of my acceptance of the appointments I am sir very respectfully your obdt. servt." With docketing on verso, dated January 2, 1849.

When the tall, shy Jackson arrived at the military academy in 1842, he was scholastically and socially underdeveloped. His childhood had been difficult - he was orphaned - and he was mostly self-educated, so he needed remedial instructions upon entering the military academy. However, he was a disciplined student who became noteworthy at the academy for his obedience and remarkable deportment (ethics was his strongest subject). Jackson graduated in 1846, seventeenth in his class of fifty-nine, and went on to become one of America's greatest soldiers, revered for his seemingly invincible leadership during the Civil War. Before he gained the moniker "Stonewall" at First Manassas during the Civil War, young Thomas Jackson was a lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment serving in Mexico. Serving from 1846 until war's end in 1848, Jackson saw action at the Battles of Contreras, Chapultepec, Mexico City, and the Siege of Veracruz. It was in Mexico that he first met Robert E. Lee. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light soiling and toning at the edges. On verso, there is an area of staining at the lower right corner. Overall very good.
