    The Great Seiges

The Citadel Military College: Albumen Photograph and War-Dated Letter. This large photograph, measuring 12" x 8.25", shows the "hornworks," a large stone that was once part of the wall that protected Charleston during the Revolutionary War. A black man is seen seated on the pilings that surround the stone, a pile of cannonballs can be seen directly behind him. In the background is the Citadel barracks and several soldiers can be seen near the doorway. Affixed to a mount to an overall size of 15.25" x 11.5". the mount has some light soiling along the margins, a small pin hole at the left edge, and scattered spots of foxing.

With the photograph is an autograph letter from Major James B. White, superintendent at The Citadel, to James Furman, a member of the South Carolina Secession Convention. One page, 8" x 10", "Citadel Academy," April 16, 1864. He writes, in part: "I received some time since, the bottle of wine kindly sent by you and should have expressed my thanks for it before this. . . . The wine was put aside until it had settled and I assure you I found it superior to any domestic wine I have yet met with. . . . Our troops are leaving this department in large numbers for N. Carolina and Gen. Beauregard on yesterday asked for the services of the cadets for 'a few days' for duty in the city, so that academic duties are suspended for the present." Furman's son was a cadet at the school and White assures him that "your son has taken a high position in the class." Separation along the folds has been repaired on the verso using clear tape. White's signature shows some smudging. Small pin holes near the middle of the letter with paper loss along the folds, some of which affect the text. Light foxing.
