    Description

Texas C.S.A. Circular: General Orders No. 10, Signed by Adjutant and Inspector General Jeremiah Y. Dashiell. One page, 5" x 7", "Adjutant General's Office, Austin, April 1, 1862." Physician, teacher, soldier and San Antonio Herald editor Jeremiah Yellott Dashiell served as Governor Francis R. Lubbock's Adjutant General and Inspector General of Texas during the Civil War. This decree sets forth three orders; the first states that "Each Brigadier General will nominate for appointment some person in all respects well qualified to discharge the duties of Brigade Surgeon." The second concerns military exemptions: "No one liable to perform military duty will be exempt upon the plea of disability, except by authority of the Brigadier General, upon the certificate of the Brigade or Regimental Surgeon." The final order states: "Volunteers are authorized to furnish substitutes, provided the substitute is under eighteen, or over fifty years of age; decided by the Brigade or Regimental Surgeon to be, in all respects, able to discharge the duties of a soldier." Signed in ink: "J. Y. Dashiell." Document is lightly age toned and in very fine condition.
