Southern States Regimental Flags: Two Autograph Letters Signed. Two stampless covers containing letters written to Dr. Philip Klipstine of New Baltimore, Virginia, by his son, P. Augustus, who was apparently a seller of "colours" to state militias. Writing from Spartansburg and Laurens Court House in South Carolina, he complains that he was unsuccessful in his efforts in Tennessee and that, in any event, Tennessee bank notes were worth less than Virginia bank notes (no doubt affecting his bottom line, assuming he could consummate a sale!) His efforts in North and South Carolina were repeatedly rebuffed with a variety of excuses ("...the spirit of nullification has not yet died out. Every officer that I have seen said that they would prefer colours with the motto of their state upon it. They seldom use a U. S. flag, when they do the eagle is upon one side and the palmetto branch upon the other..."). He tried dropping his prices by half, "pawning" colours for cash advances, offering to trade for horses, and getting an agency to sell patent compasses in Western Virginia and Tennessee. The monetary situation is dire, with the staple cotton falling from "18 and 20 cts to 4 and 7", his horse, Gallant, is going lame, and he's only got $2 left to his name. He considers seeking out a teaching position in the free schools soon to be established in South Carolina. Minor uneven toning.Auction Info
