    Description

Sitting Bull Card Signed "Sitting Bull." 3.25" x 1.75", no place; no date. Sitting Bull (c. 1831-1890) was the most famous Indian leader of his day. He represented all that Americans feared and admired most about native peoples. He was thought to have led the triumph of the allied northern plains tribes over Custer and the 7th Cavalry at Little Bighorn, and he symbolized continued Indian resistance to the government's reservation policies even after the conquest of the Sioux and Cheyenne by the U.S. Army. Sitting Bull later took the opportunity in 1885 to travel with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, hoping not only to learn more about the white man's world but also to be able to plead the Indian cause to a wider audience.

The card is accompanied by a 1932 typed letter of provenance. One page, 8.5" x 11", New York; May 12, 1932. From Arthur Johns to Robert Ehrenberg, providing provenance information regarding the autograph. It reads in part:

"Many years ago when I came to New York as a young man I lived with Doctor Francis J. Quinlan and we became very good friends. He at one time was contract Doctor in the United States Army and stationed out in the far West. At that time he met and knew 'Sitting Bull'. Many years after that, as I recall it, Sitting Bull came to New York with Buffalo Bill's Show at the Old Madison Square Garden at 26th Street and Madison Avenue. Doctor Quinlan was then married and had a step-son named Doctor Stephen Roof and they went to see the Wild West Show at the Old Garden. Dr. Quinlan introduced his step-son to Sitting Bull and Sitting Bull gave him the enclosed autograph."

Condition: The signed card is toned throughout, with a small spot of soiling at the lower edge. The bottom left corner is bent and creased. The letter of provenance has flattened folds and light uneven toning throughout. Soiling on verso has bled through to the front.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
