    Description

    Ship's Log Book for Ship Boy. Seventy-six pages, 7" x 8.5", Newport [Rhode Island], 1822-1823. On the cover page is recorded that the log book was kept aboard the "Ship Boy, Capt. Nathanael Greene, from Newport bound for Havana in the Island of Cuba. Passengers on board Sr Dn Andres M. Oliver, Lady & Servants Mr. George Griswold & Edward Spalding. At Sea December 30. 1822. . . . Havana." The log book contains accounts for several other vessels, such as the Gen. Jackson, Maria, Remittance, and more. Among the products mentioned in the numerous accounts are coffee, sugar, molasses, cigars, wine, guayave jelly, and ginger.

    Members of the DeWolf family are listed throughout the log book. James DeWolf represented Rhode Island in the U.S. Senate from 1821 until 1824. The wealthy Rhode Island family maintained plantations with slaves and were known to continue to bring slaves to the U.S. after it was illegal. The log book is bound with string; no covers.
