Seminole Indian Documents (4), including two signed by Indians, one a chief. All of these documents are written from "New Seminole Agency [Indian Territory]" and concern the theft of horses from newly arrived Seminole Indians by Osage Indians in 1857. Each document is signed by Samuel M. Rutherford, U.S. Seminole Agent, in Indian Territory, and dated October 8, 1860.(1) Samuel M. Rutherford, U.S. Seminole Agent, Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", to Major Elias C. Rector, Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The agent writes concerning the claims made by the Seminole Indians. In part: "Herewith you will find a list of claims made out for horses stolen by the Osage Indians from a party of Seminole in December 1857, while they were looking out suitable places for settlement in their new country. I have taken the affidavits of some nine Seminoles. . . . I have every reason to believe that they have sustained the loss here complained of. . . . I have to request that the claims, after being examined by you, may be forwarded to the department with such remarks as you think they are entitled to." With some weakness at fold intersections. Clearly written in bold ink.
(2) Foos-hatchee-co-cho-nee Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75". Foos-hatchee-co-cho-nee, the "head chief of one of the Seminole Bands," affirms with his mark ("X") that he and other Seminoles had "stolen from them by the Osage Indians twenty head of horses." The names of seven other Seminoles are listed among those who lost horses. Missing paper from left margin, though no loss of text.
(3) Hoth-le-ho-ye Document Signed "X" affirming that he "had stolen from him by the Osage Indians one horse worth fifty dollars."
(4) Indian Claim List, being "a list of the claims for horses alleged to have been stolen from a party of Seminole about the 1st of December 1857 while engaged in exploring their new country with a view of making suitable selections for settlement by a party of Osage Indians." Columns follow, listing the names of eight Seminoles, the number of horses stolen from each, and the "valuation of each Horse." The vertical fold has been repaired with tape.
